Syntaxis conducts e-mail etiquette training at client locations in New York City and throughout North America. |
The advent of electronic mail has expedited business communications — but at a great cost to clarity and basic business etiquette. Many electronic messages reach their destinations in a state of linguistic chaos, lacking the traditional hallmarks of good business correspondence: a clear purpose, logical organization, and appropriate punctuation and mechanics.
Despite the conversational feel of much computer-based communication, e-mail is nonetheless a written form and must therefore observe many of the conventions associated with traditional business letters and memos. Syntaxis e-mail training considers these conventions while also addressing issues new to a world of increasingly electronic correspondence. Training options include half-day and full-day on-site e-mail workshops, a shorter Lunch & Learn seminar, and occasional public workshops open to individual registrants.
On-Site Workshops: E-Mail Training for Groups
Syntaxis e-mail etiquette workshops offer guidance to business professionals on e-mail issues common in the workplace. The training format encourages discussion and questions, and exercises reinforce course principles. Each workshop participant receives a copy of the book E-Mail Etiquette for Business Professionals from Syntaxis Press.
e-mail or email?
There is much confusion not only about how to write good e-mail, but also about how to write the term e-mail itself. Is it e-mail etiquette or email etiquette? We prefer e-mail, but the hyphen-free email can also be found in reliable dictionaries, so it's hard to go wrong!
The Etiquette of E-Mail
Half-day workshop. This e-mail workshop addresses some of the most common failings in electronic communications today, from basic questions of form to more complex ethical issues. The smallest details do much to convey tone and courtesy, so workshop participants discuss appropriate salutations and closings, signature files, word choice, and the importance of adhering to traditional rules of grammar. The workshop also covers the need for a concise, descriptive subject line and a clearly stated purpose. Finally, participants consider some of the ethical risks associated with excessive or indiscriminate copying and forwarding of e-mail messages, as well as when to avoid e-mail altogether.
Customized E-Mail Etiquette Workshops
One-day workshops. We often customize e-mail etiquette training to meet the specific instructional needs of our clients. For example, we can combine the content of our half-day e-mail workshop, "The Etiquette of E-Mail," described above, with a half day of (1) additional business writing training, (2) additional grammar training, or (3) a mixture of writing and grammar training. Along with a copy of the book E-Mail Etiquette for Business Professionals from Syntaxis Press, each participant receives A Writing Guide for Business Professionals and/or A Grammar Guide for Business Professionals, as appropriate.

Lunch & Learn Seminars: E-Mail Training for Groups
Our Lunch & Learn e-mail seminars are shorter than the workshops described above and can accommodate more participants. Nonetheless, the training style remains lively and interactive, with plenty of audience participation. For a complete listing of our luncheon training sessions in all subject areas, please visit the Lunch & Learn Seminars section of our website.
E-Mail Etiquette Lunch & Learn
60- or 90-minute seminar. This seminar covers questions of e-mail form and etiquette, including salutations, closings, signature files, punctuation, and capitalization. Other topics include ethical issues associated with copying and forwarding capabilities, as well as strategies for reducing e-mail volume and improving efficiency. The seminar concludes with a brief discussion of the limitations of e-mail. Each participant receives a copy of the book E-Mail Etiquette for Business Professionals from Syntaxis Press.
Public Workshops: E-Mail Training Open to Individuals
Syntaxis conducts occasional public workshops open to individual registrants. Most public classes are sessions of our one-day combination course, "Business Writing & Grammar Workshop," which includes roughly 1.25 hours of training focusing specifically on e-mail writing and etiquette. The remainder of that workshop focuses on business writing and grammar training relevant for diverse business writing contexts, including e-mail correspondence. For a calendar of upcoming public classes, please visit our Public Workshops page.
